Verizon releases 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report

Verizon has released its 16th annual Data Breach Investigations Report, which revealed that the median cost per ransomware has more than doubled to $26,000 over the past two years, with 95% of incidents costing between $1 and $2.25 million. Other highlights inclide:

  • Ransomware attacks have risen dramatically in frequency, representing 24% of all breaches. 
  • Social engineering is one of the most common ways to exploit human nature in attacks, with phishing being a popular tactic. 
  • Senior leadership represents a growing cybersecurity threat for many organisations, as they possess the most sensitive information and are often among the least protected. Organisations must enhance the protection of their senior leadership to avoid expensive system intrusions.
