UK DPDIB second reading in House of Lords

18/12/2023 | UK Parliament

On Tuesday, 19 December 2023, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology Viscount Camrose introduced the Data Protection and Digital Information (No.2) (DPDI) Bill for its second reading in the House of Lords.

A date for the start of the committee stage has not been set.

Ahead of the DPDIB's second reading, the Open Rights Group published a briefing paper outlining the opportunity to create a world-leading data protection authority. Emphasising the need for the House of Lords to hold the government to account, the paper highlights the poor performance of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) on enforcement during 2021-22, in which the regulator issued zero enforcement notices or criminal prosecutions and only 4 UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) fines totalling just £633,000.
