Ofcom has fined the online message board 4chan £20,000 for failing to protect children from harmful content under the Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA). The regulator opened its investigation in June after 4chan failed to comply with an April request for copies of its illegal content risk assessments and information regarding its worldwide revenue.

The fine could increase by a further £6,000 due to an additional charge of £100 per day for up to 60 days if the platform continues to withhold the requested information. Ofcom highlighted that maximum penalties for breaches of the OSA can reach £18 million or 10% of an organisation’s qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever amount is greater.
