The incident involved a longstanding phone number that the government had told the Covid inquiry was no longer operational. However, a prank call is understood to have heard the phone ringing and a voicemail recording for Sunak. If the recording is proven true, it may prompt questions about why the government told the inquiry that Sunak's old messages are no longer recoverable. The inquiry had requested key communications sent during the pandemic from Sunak, Johnson, and nearly 40 other senior figures and advisers.
