The Italian data protection authority, the Garante, has fined Clearview AI €20 million for EU General Data Protection Regulation violations related to its facial recognition software and database. "The personal data held by the company, including biometric and geolocation data, are processed unlawfully," the Garante said in a statement. In addition to the fine, Clearview AI is ordered to delete all data collected on individuals in Italy and prohibited to continue collection and processing activities in the country. The enforcement action follows the £17 million monetary penalty issued by the ICO in November and a decision by the French DPA in December ordering the company to stop processing publicly accessible online images and to delete data within two months.
