Twitter's FTC settlement puts privacy protections under the microscope

Twitter's $150 million settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) before Elon Musk purchased the platform leaves its privacy and data security protections under serious scrutiny. Former FTC officials have said the commission would watch closely for any activity violating the settlement relating to Twitter's improper use of phone numbers for ad targeting. Meanwhile, in late October, Musk tweeted his interest in driving more targeted ads on Twitter, which would either mean improving its profiling capabilities or its ad personalisation algorithms, both of which would ramp up data processing.
