Twitter fined $150M by US FTC for deceptive advertising practices

The Federal Trade Commission in the US has issued Twitter with a $150 million fine for using account security data for targeted advertising, violating an earlier order from 2011. The FTC said Twitter asks for user phone numbers and email addresses to protect accounts but then allowed advertisers on the platform to use this data, impacting 140 million users. Twitter is also banned from profiting from deceptively collected data and must notify users where data is misused, along with implementing and maintaining a privacy and information security programme.

An FTC blog post outlines the importance of proper breach disclosure practices, including how they can "fulfill legal obligations and be essential to enabling consumers and other affected parties to take actions to mitigate harm resulting from the breach."
