EU Commission to address cookie fatigue in revamp of consent banner requirements

22/09/2025 | Politico

Politico reports on the plans by the European Commission to simplify the e-Privacy Directive, which requires websites to display cookie consent pop-ups. The call for evidence announced last week is part of a broader omnibus proposal to slash red tape and address "consent fatigue" among users who have grown accustomed to automatically clicking away pop-ups. The Commission is exploring options to introduce more exceptions to consent or to allow users to set their preferences just once, possibly in their browser settings. EU countries, including Denmark, have also suggested dropping consent banners for "harmless" cookies used for technically necessary functions or simple statistics.
