ORG published roundtable notes on relaxing cookie consent requirements

The Open Rights Group (ORG) has published notes from a roundtable it hosted on the future of cookie consent requirements in the UK. The event was held in response to an Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) consultation intended to support the government's plans to develop secondary legislation that would give it powers to introduce exceptions to consent rules with limited parliamentary scrutiny.

The ORG warned that relaxing online tracking rules carries high risks. It argues that behavioural tracking drives online harms, such as tech addiction and disinformation, and that a new law could expose users to harmful advertising and predatory targeting. The roundtable included officials from relevant government departments and regulatory authorities, as well as experts from civil society and the privacy and advertising industries. The ORG is urging MPs to get involved in the debate before a new Statutory Instrument is laid before Parliament.
