Following the report in The Wall Street Journal and the subsequent response by Austrian privacy group Noyb concerning Meta's plans to change its legal basis for processing user data in order to deliver targeted advertising from performing a contract to legitimate interests, the team at NOYB have built a tool for users to opt out of targeted advertising by Meta. Regardless of whether relying on legitimate interests is lawful, NOYB points out that exercising EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rights must be simple and easy, which they are not.
Max Schrems said, "These moves by Facebook are just laughable and embarrassing. You have to find each element in their privacy policy that you disagree with and explain why Meta's assessment is wrong in your individual case. Their assessment, however, is not published. It's not far from saying you can only opt-out ever second Monday from 8am to 9am."
