Meta adds parental control tools for Instagram and Messenger

28/06/2023 | MediaPost

Meta has introduced new parental control tools for Instagram and Messenger.

On Messenger, new features include monitoring how much time teens spend on the app, blocking unwanted DMs, and reminding teens to take a break on Facebook. While parents won't have access to their teen's actual messages, they can view their contact list, privacy settings, and be notified if their teen reports someone. The company plans to add more features over the next year to help parents manage their teen's time and interactions while balancing privacy.

Instagram is implementing new measures to protect teens from unwanted interactions. Anyone who wishes to message a teen must first send an invite to connect, which will be text-only. Meta is also encouraging teens to add their parents to supervise their account as an extra layer of support. A notice will appear after they've blocked someone, reminding them of the benefits of parental guidance. Parents will also be able to see how many friends their teen has in common with the accounts they follow and are followed by, providing a better understanding of their child's connections.
