Meta to resume plans to train AI systems in Europe
14/04/2025 | Independent
In a blog article on Monday, Meta announced its intention to start using publicly available content from European users to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models. The decision follows a pause last year due to data protection concerns. The company stated that it will utilise public posts and comments shared by adult users within the 27-nation European Union to train its AI systems. Interactions with Meta AI, such as questions and queries, will also be used for this purpose.
The move comes after the recent launch of Meta AI assistant for European users. Meta cited the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) Opinion on processing personal data for AI purposes in December, which the company said "affirmed our original approach met our legal obligations." The company clarified that private messages will not be used for AI training and that its approach aligns with competitors like Google and OpenAI, which have already used European user data for AI model training. Meta will begin notifying EU users about this training and will provide a link to a form where users can object at any time, stating that all objections will be honoured.
