Meta to launch new AI models outside Europe

Meta has unveiled its latest large language model, Llama 3, along with an image generator that updates pictures in real-time while users type prompts. The models will be integrated into the virtual assistant Meta AI, which the company has dubbed as the most sophisticated among its free-to-use peers. The virtual assistant will be incorporated into Meta's Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger apps, as well as a new standalone website that makes it more competitive with Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT. The update will expand Meta AI's reach to more than a dozen markets outside the US, including Australia, Canada, Singapore, Nigeria, and Pakistan. However, expansion into Europe will have to wait as the company considers how to address compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act)
