Research and consulting firm Gartner has published a guide outlining the areas organisations should focus on to implement artificial intelligence (AI) systems successfully.
Despite the opportunities that AI presents, Gartner cautions that many early adopters of the technology have become disillusioned because the majority of AI projects failed to deploy as projected. While between 17 and 25% of organisations planned to deploy AI systems every year from 2019 to 2024, the annual growth in successful deployments was only 2% to 5%.
The key is to define AI opportunities clearly, addressing three areas, including the level of AI opportunity ambition, which refers to the benefits that a business hopes to achieve through the use of AI. Organisations should focus on the technical options available for AI deployment that can either limit or enable the opportunities for successful implementation. These include whether AI systems are public or closed and the level of customisation. Finally, organisations should seek to balance a range of AI risks relating to privacy, explainability, security and emerging regulations.
