CMC estimates Jaguar Land Rover cyberattack will cost UK £1.9b

22/10/2025 | Financial Times

The recent cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is estimated to have cost the UK at least £1.9 billion, making it likely the country’s most economically damaging cyber event to date. The month-long shutdown of internal systems and vehicle production, which began on 31 August, affected over 5,000 British organisations.

The Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC) attributes the financial impact to lost vehicle sales, lower profits, incident response costs, and severe disruption to JLR’s supply chain. The UK government offered a £1.5 billion loan guarantee to help the Tata Motors-owned carmaker access credit. The total cost is based on the assumption that JLR will not fully restore production until January and that the attackers did not breach the company’s operational technology.
