European Commission extends Republic of Korea adequacy decision

The European Commission has conducted its first review of the 2021 adequacy decision for the Republic of Korea, confirming that South Korea continues to ensure an adequate level of protection for personal data transferred from the EU. The review highlights growing convergence between EU and South Korean data protection frameworks, supported by amendments to South Korean law that enhanced data subject rights.
In addition to reaffirming the adequacy decision, the Commission's report includes recommendations to further strengthen safeguards concerning data transfers to third countries and regulatory enforcement.
