EU and South Korea issue joint statement confirming adequacy decision
16/09/2025 | European Commission
The European Union and the Republic of Korea have reached a mutual adequacy arrangement after the South Korean data protection commission recognised the EU's data protection framework as equivalent. The move follows a 2021 EU adequacy decision and creates a comprehensive area of free and safe personal data flows for both jurisdictions.
The arrangement encompasses both private and public sectors, ensuring strong protections for citizens' data while providing unobstructed data transfers for businesses. The agreement is also expected to enhance trade benefits, facilitate joint research, and serve as a basis for closer cooperation on global discussions about data protection and artificial intelligence.
Training Announcement: Freevacy offers a range of independent data protection qualifications from IAPP and BCS.
