EU Governments call for ‘overarching and comprehensive evaluation’ of GDPR

According to the Council of the European Union, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has successfully completed its fifth year of implementation. The Council's position on the status of the data protection law, which highlights the successes of the GDPR in enhancing trust and legal certainty, was adopted by the Committee of Permanent Representatives on Thursday, 23 November. However, the Council acknowledges several practical implementation challenges for private and public entities and calls for further clarifications and a strategy for future data adequacy decisions. The European governments have invited the Commission to evaluate the application and functioning of the GDPR in a report due in 2024, which is set to consider the findings of the EU Council, Parliament, and any other relevant body.
