EDPS says EU needs more restrictions on targeted advertising

European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski has published a blog post requesting increased scrutiny and regulation of Ad Tech. Wojciech Wiewiórowski said that efforts to rein in targeted advertising through transparency and accountability principles in the proposed Digital Services Act are commendable, but noted transparency "is essential but it is not enough." He also added that the EU needs "regulatory incentives to favour less intrusive forms of advertising that do not require tracking" while proposing "further restricting the categories of personal data that can be processed for targeted advertising purposes."
