EDPB adopts data breach notification template, meets with Commissioner McGrath

During its latest plenary session, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) adopted a common data breach notification template designed to structure, harmonise, and unify data breach reporting. The initiative aligns with the EDPB's commitments in the Helsinki Statement to simplify EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance and enhance consistency across the bloc. The template ensures that submissions contain all information required by Article 33 of the GDPR. It includes predefined options and guidance to save time and costs. The measure is designed to assist organisations, particularly smaller businesses, in making timely notifications. It will also support data protection authorities (DPAs) in assessing cases. The template is subject to public consultation until 5 August 2026, after which a timeline for mandatory implementation by all DPAs will be decided.

The EDPB also met with the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, to discuss mutual priorities, stressing that adequate funding and staffing for data protection authorities (DPAs) is essential. The EDPB voiced concern over the Digital Omnibus proposals, warning that proposed amendments to the definition of personal data risk significantly weakening individual data protection. In addition, discussions covered cross-regulatory cooperation, the protection of children, including upcoming guidelines on processing minors' data, international data transfers, and a report concerning guidelines for processing personal data to target or deliver political advertisements.
