Staff at the Alan Turing Institute have warned that the UK's leading artificial intelligence (AI) institute is at risk of collapse after the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle, threatened to withdraw its funding. In a whistleblowing complaint submitted to the Charity Commission, staff accused the institute's leadership of misusing public funds and creating a "toxic internal culture."

The complaint alleges that Kyle's letter, which urged the institute to pivot its focus to defence research, triggered a "crisis in governance" and put a £100 million government grant at risk. A government spokesperson confirmed that Kyle wants the institute to deliver "real value for money for taxpayers" and refocus its work on national security.
