NHS Trusts paid £1.5m in data breach claims since 2021

An analysis of data obtained via a number of Freedom of Information requests by Legal Expert has identified that NHS trusts across the UK have paid out £1.5 million in data breach claims since 2021. The most common breach being unauthorised access" to personal data. Eleanor Coleman, a data breach specialist at Legal Expert, expressed concern about the rise in data breaches within the health sector and emphasized the importance of organizations ensuring they have sufficient security measures in place to protect people's personal information.

Data breaches within the health sector rose by 21% between 2022 and 2023 to 1,949 incidents, according to the Information Commissioner's Office.
