In June 2017, the UK government announced plans to introduce new data protection legislation to implement the coming General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). The resulting Data Protection Act 2018 must be read in conjunction with the UK GDPR as both are required to comply with the data protection legislation in the UK. Considerable discussion has always occurred over the issue of whether the EU General Data Protection Regulations contains six principles or seven. It's easy to see the basis for the disagreement, with six principles being laid out in Article 5(1). Then under Article 5(2) comes the accountability principle and the debate begins. In this article, we discuss the legal obligation to abide by each of the principles and provide evidence of compliance.
