A roundup of industry posts celebrating Data Protection Day 2026

28/01/2026 | Various

Every year, on 28 January, we celebrate International Data Protection Day. The day is an opportunity to reflect on what privacy and data protection mean to individuals and society.

As always, we have sourced a collection of posts from regulators and other bodies to mark the occasion:

  • The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) chose only to mark the occasion on social media. In its LinkedIn post celebrating "Data Privacy Day" (not data protection day, as we celebrate in the UK and Europe), the ICO focuses on its Ripple Effect Campaign, highlighting that data protection is about people and trust.
  • The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) published a blog article highlighting the importance of keeping children's personal data safe online.
  • The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) mentioned the day on its news page; however, we did not notice a dedicated post.
  • NOYB posted an article debunking 5 misconceptions about data protection.
  • An insightful article by the Open Rights Group looks at the role information has played in social organisation and control, and why protecting our data rights has never been more important.
  • The Future of Privacy Forum published 6 tips for the generative AI era.

Training Announcement: Freevacy offers a range of independent data protection qualifications from IAPP and BCS. Our certified courses are available at foundation and practitioner levels and cover multiple legal jurisdictions, data protection operations management, and the implementation of complex privacy solutions in technical environments. Find out more.
