American Data Privacy and Protection Act heads for House floor

The authors behind the proposed American Data Privacy and Protection Act have released an amended version of the bill before the US House Committee on Energy and Commerce's markup session on 20 July. The amendments include reducing the private right of action's effective date from four to two years post-adoption, alterations to enforcement around the authority of the US Federal Trade Commission and the California Privacy Protection Agency, along with technical changes to the definitions for "covered entity" and "service provider." 

UPDATE: 210722 - IAPP reports that the possibility of a comprehensive federal privacy bill clearing the US House of Representatives is drawing near. The House Committee on Energy and Commerce voted 53-2 in favour of advancing an amended version of the proposed American Data Privacy and Protection Act to the House floor, following a full committee markup. Committee members from California brought forward an issue with intensified opposition to preemption, particularly preemption of California's privacy laws. Otherwise, issues were few and far between.
