Science Committee report warns UK government must fix tech sovereignty

The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee has published a report warning that the UK must establish a sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities strategy or risk having access to vital technology cut off by international partners.

The report criticises the government for lacking a coherent strategic framework to convert world-class scientific research into economic and diplomatic goals, describing its approach to international science agreements as merely opportunistic. Committee MPs highlight that the recent US restrictions on Anthropic's Mythos-class Fable 5 AI model demonstrate the extreme national security and economic risks of relying entirely on foreign allies for critical technology.

Furthermore, the committee stresses that geopolitical instability makes it urgent to address the UK's long-standing failure to scale homegrown tech startups. Many innovative companies are currently forced to move overseas due to a lack of late-stage funding. The report urges the government to rectify these issues through targeted investment and public procurement to protect national security and economic prosperity.
