A new private members' Bill introduced in the House of Lords by Conservative MP Damian Hinds aims to give publishers greater visibility over the scraping of online content by automated bots. The Automated Online Software (Access and Transparency) Bill would require bot operators systematically copying UK website content to declare their identity and purpose.
Backed by the News Media Association, the proposals are a response to surging bot traffic used to build artificial intelligence (AI) models.
The Bill's progress will depend on whether it receives government backing, ahead of its second reading scheduled for Friday, 16 October.
