UK announces AI Safety Institute will become AI Security Institute

14/02/2025 | UK Government

On Friday, 14 February 2025, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) announced that the UK AI Safety Institute (AISI) will be renamed the UK AI Security Institute (AISI).

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, days after the AI Action Summit in Paris, UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Peter Kyle said: "The changes I'm announcing today represent the logical next step in how we approach responsible AI development... The work of the AI Security Institute won't change, but this renewed focus will ensure our citizens – and those of our allies - are protected from those who would look to use AI against our institutions, democratic values, and way of life."

The new AISI will introduce a new criminal misuse team collaborating with the Home Office to address various crimes and security concerns, such as combating the utilisation of AI in creating child sexual abuse images. While the restructured AISI will prioritise understanding the most severe risks associated with AI technology, it will also move away from addressing previous concerns about bias or freedom of speech.

The government claims that taking such a scientific approach will provide policymakers with a solid evidence base to enhance national safety as AI evolves. The AISI will partner with government bodies, the Laboratory for AI Security Research (LASR), and the national security community, leveraging expertise from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to fulfil its mission effectively.
