In a press release, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said the government-industry AI task force would help "develop the safe and reliable use of this pivotal artificial intelligence across the economy and ensure the UK is globally competitive in this strategic technology."
Putting the figure into context, The Register reports generative AI systems are considerably more expensive to build than the sum the UK has pledged. For instance, Microsoft is investing $10 billion into OpenAI for an exclusive license to incorporate the company's AI software into its products.
