UK and Japan extend data adequacy agreement

The transfer of personal data between the UK and Japan will continue after Chris Bryant, Minister of State for Data Protection and Telecoms at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology met with Commissioner Shuhei Ohshima of the Personal Information Protection Commission of Japan in London to reaffirm their committement to operationalise Data Free Flow with Trust, (DFFT). 

The Japan-UK adequacy arrangements, established in 2020 following the UK withdrawal from the EU, will be expanded to include protections for academia, the public sector, to facilitate collaborative research, and other administrative cooperation beyond the scope of the existing partnership.
