New National Commission to accelerate safe use of AI by NHS

26/09/2025 | UK Government

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced that a new National Commission has been established to advise on revising the regulatory rules concerning the safe use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies by the NHS. The commission, which includes experts from major tech companies, clinicians, and patient advocates, is tasked with ensuring NHS patients receive quicker access to the latest AI tools.

The new approach aims to provide regulatory clarity for tools such as AI assistants that take notes for doctors, and remote monitoring systems that support virtual patient care. The commission will also examine AI tools for radiology and pathology. This initiative is designed to attract technology companies to invest and innovate in the UK, supporting the government's plan to build an NHS fit for the future. The new regulatory rulebook is scheduled for publication next year.
