ICO appears before DCMS Select Committee, Tech Horizons report

18/01/2023 | UK Government

Watch: Appearing before the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on Monday, Information Commissioner John Edwards and Director of Tech & Innovation Stephen Almond answered questions about connected devices, safeguards for children, automated decision making and data security. Executives from Google and Amazon were also in attendance. John Edwards answered a question about whether tech companies suffer consumer trust issues: "People are flocking to these devices. They are installing them in their homes." He went on to concede he was unsure "whether this enthusiasm for these devices is based on an ignorance of the data issues that they represent or, conversely, whether it is based on an expectation amongst consumers that organisations like mine are there to watch their back".

The ICO posted a Twitter thread outlining some of the points raised in the discussion. In addition, the ICO highlighted a new report, which it states "examines the implications of some of the most significant technological developments for privacy in the next two to five years." The report was published on the ICO website on 15 December but is yet to be formally announced. After speaking to the ICO's media team, an announcement is expected next week.
