Home Office appoints interim biometrics commissioner

The Home Office has announced the appointment of Francesca Whitelaw KC as the interim biometrics commissioner, a role that has been vacant since August 2024.
Francesca Whitelaw, a King's Counsel specialising in public, information, and human rights law, with expertise in biometrics and national security, assumes the post from 1 July 2025 for a period of up to six months. Whitelaw will oversee casework functions, including National Security Determinations and police applications under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, while the government conducts an open competition for the permanent Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner.
