DSIT launches Expert Panel for Growing up in an Online World

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has launched an independent panel of academics to advise the government on evidence and research concerning children's online wellbeing. The expert panel is part of the government's consultation on further measures to protect children online and brings together a diverse range of academic fields to evaluate the quality and credibility of data surrounding online safety.

The panel's primary role is to advise on the evolving impacts of digital technologies, including social media, gaming, and artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots. The panel will review emerging data to identify gaps and help shape research priorities for 2026 to 2027 and beyond. In addition, the panel will monitor DSIT's approach to presenting consultation evidence, assess potential behavioural responses from children, parents, and platforms, and provide recommendations to ensure ministers make well-informed, evidence-based policy decisions.
