43% of UK businesses experienced cybersecurity incidents last year

The latest Cyber Security Breaches Survey report published by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has revealed that 612,000 (43%) of UK businesses experienced a cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. The findings suggest an improvement in cyber resilience compared to the previous year, in which 718,000 (50%) companies experienced a breach. However, the report finds that the decrease largely relates to smaller businesses identifying fewer phishing attacks and that the prevalence of cyber breaches and attacks on larger businesses was comparable in 2024.

The report estimated that there were 8.58 million cybercrimes against businesses in the last 12 months, with the average breach costing approximately £1,600 for businesses, rising to £3550 for the most disruptive breaches.
