MoD implements AI tool to prevent personal data breaches
25/08/2025 | The Times
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has turned to artificial intelligence (AI) to help prevent personal data breaches caused by human error. The MoD has contracted Castlepoint Systems, an Australian company, to deploy an advanced AI tool that automatically classifies government files and attaches a security tag. According to Castlepoint chief executive, Rachael Greaves, such tags can prevent files from being emailed or printed, reducing the risk of mistakes.
The AI tool is not based on machine learning, but is instead trained on "rules" and is "explainable," meaning it can show users why it made a specific security decision.
An MoD spokesperson said the department is committed to adopting AI safely and has introduced new secure software and training for staff to strengthen data protection.
