Highways England loses 18-month FOI battle over unsafe bridges

Around half of Englands busiest bridges are severely defected or damaged and in need of urgent repair, following an investigation by the Times. The information was obtained under the Freedom of Information; however, the Highways England attempted to keep the data secret and released it only after an 18-month battle. The ICO found that Highways England’s arguments were baseless and ordered release. However, the disclosure was delayed again when Highways England asked a judge to rule that the information should be withheld.
