Computer Misuse Act to be reviewed

11/05/2021 | The Register

Home Secretary, Priti Patel has pledged a legal review of the Computer Misuse Act in a speech at the CyberUK conference organised by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). "As part of ensuring that we have the right tools and mechanisms to detect, disrupt and deter our adversaries, I believe now is the right time to undertake a formal review of the Computer Misuse Act," said Patel. Passed in 1990, the Computer Misuse Act (CMA) was last amended in 2008 to increase prison sentences and make DDoS attacks a criminal offence. However, the CMA has long been in need of updating.  In related news, Reuters reports the UK is set to ban default passwords for smart TVs and speakers to increase security.
