UK and Europe sovereign cloud spend forecast to triple
09/02/2026 | The Register
European spending on sovereign cloud infrastructure is forecast to more than triple between 2025 and 2027 as geopolitical tensions drive a shift towards homegrown services. According to Gartner, worldwide spending in this sector is expected to reach $80 billion in 2026, with Western Europe, including the UK, projected to grow by 83% from a base of $6.9 billion.
The surge is largely attributed to European uneasiness over reliance on US hyperscalers. The US CLOUD Act, which allows American authorities to compel companies to provide data stored globally, remains a primary concern. These anxieties have been intensified by trade tensions following President Trump's return to power, with customers fearing service disruptions or unpredictable policy changes that could affect their digital infrastructure and data sovereignty.
