EU to begin biometrics registration for short-stay foreign travellers
25/09/2025 | The Register
Travellers from outside the EU, including those from the UK and the US, will be required to register their fingerprints and faces under the new European Union Entry/Exit System (EES). The system will be phased in between 12 October and 10 April, covering short-term travel to the 29 Schengen area countries.
Non-EU citizens over the age of 11 are required to register their biometric data and passport upon first entry, creating a record that will be retained for a period of three (or five years, where no exit is recorded). This process will replace the current system of passport stamping and, for subsequent crossings, will require a fingerprint or facial scan. The EU states that the EES, run by the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (eu-LISA), will enhance border check efficiency and security, and make it easier to enforce the rule limiting non-EU citizens to 90 days every 180 days in the Schengen area.
