Google to launch its Gemini AI chatbot for under 13 year-olds

02/05/2025 | The New York Times

Google has announced plans to launch its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot for children under the age of 13 who have parent-managed Google accounts, with the rollout expected next week. In an email sent to parents using Google's Family Link service, which allows families to manage their children's Gmail accounts and access services like YouTube, Google stated that "Gemini Apps will soon be available for your child," enabling them to use the chatbot for tasks such as asking questions, receiving homework assistance, and creating stories.

According to Google spokesperson Karl Ryan, Gemini will incorporate specific safeguards for younger users to prevent them from producing unsafe content, and the company will not use any data generated to train its AI models.
