India expects to pass data protection bill in summer 2023

India is aiming for July - August 2023 to pass its Digital Personal Data Protection Bill (DPDPB), according to  Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology. Speaking to the Indian Express, Vaishnaw said "sea change over the years" led to the drafting of the latest bill and its predecessors while noting the prime minister's mandate "to prepare a comprehensive digital legal framework." Vaishnaw added that the draft bill is currently under public consultation and review by an unspecified parliamentary committee.
