US House of Representatives bans WhatsApp on official devices

Following in the footsteps of the Scottish Government, the US House of Representatives announced on Monday that it has banned WhatsApp from all official devices used by its staff. A memo from the chief administrative officer stated that: "Office of Cybersecurity has deemed WhatsApp a high-risk to users due to the lack of transparency in how it protects user data, absence of stored data encryption, and potential security risks involved with its use." Instead, the memo authorises the use of other messaging apps, including Microsoft Teams, Amazon's Wickr, Signal, and Apple's iMessage and FaceTime platforms.
