UK online age checks 'really big moment'
13/07/2025 | The Guardian
Melanie Dawes, Chief Executive at Ofcom, has called the upcoming mandatory age verification checks a "really big moment" for online child safety in the UK. The new rules, part of the Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA), are due to come into effect on 25 July. Dawes believes the change will mark a significant turning point in the regulation of online platforms.
However, campaigners, including bereaved parents, are pressuring Ofcom for tougher action, arguing that the new rules may still allow young people to access harmful material.
In related news, a report in The Register highlights warnings by MPs claiming the OSA "isn't up to scratch" on issues such as misinformation.
