Palantir linked to rise in NHS medical records research opt-outs

Growing public mistrust of US technology company Palantir has prompted tens of thousands of patients to withdraw consent over the use of their medical records in NHS research projects.

In a letter to Layla Moran, chair of the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee, Health Innovation Minister James Frith accepted concerns regarding public confidence and data sharing. Between May and July, 60,000 additional patients exercised their right to opt out, which blocks information use for research and planning while maintaining direct patient care. Frith warned that any significant escalation of opt-outs could jeopardise the government's 10-year health plan.

The news comes as ministers consider whether to activate a break clause in Palantir's £330 million contract for the Federated Data Platform (FDP). Frith also clarified that NHS trusts face no mandatory requirement to adopt the FDP and may select alternatives.
