OpenAI has launched its "Strawberry" series of AI models designed to tackle complex problems in science, coding, and math. The models, known as o1 and o1-mini, are capable of engaging in general reasoning and have demonstrated significant improvements over previous models. The o1 model scored 83% on the International Mathematics Olympiad qualifying exam, outperforming its predecessor, GPT-4o, which only scored 13%. These advancements are attributed to incorporating "chain-of-thought" reasoning techniques that enable the models to break down complex queries in order to think through problems more thoroughly and refine their problem-solving strategies.
Additional reporting from the Financial Times (£) reveals that OpenAI has increased its safety testing protocols to match the advances, including providing UK and US AI safety institutes access to research versions of the model. The o1 models have been integrated into ChatGPT since Thursday, 12 September.
