OpenAI converts to a for-profit business

OpenAI has converted its main business into a for-profit public benefit corporation, concluding a lengthy legal process approved by US Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings. The restructuring, initially proposed in September 2024, allows the company, which began as a non-profit, to more easily raise capital and profit from its technology while remaining under the control of its original non-profit entity. As part of the change, OpenAI finalised a new agreement with Microsoft, granting the software giant an approximate 27% stake in the new corporation. The deal values OpenAI at $500 billion.
