DCMS to stop using X

UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has announced that she and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will stop using X, marking the first major cabinet department exit from the platform. Nandy stated that the site now favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate, harming democracy and communities, and that she will instead use Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
Government communication rules allow ministers to determine departmental social media usage, following a cross-government ban on paid advertising on such platforms since 2023. The announcement by Nandy follows a similar move by the Attorney General for England and Wales, Richard Hermer, whose department stopped using the site earlier in June. Most departments are now prioritising platforms with larger user bases, such as Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, and TikTok.
