Burnham to scrap Starmer's digital ID scheme

Incoming Labour leader Andy Burnham is expected to scrap plans for digital ID cards upon entering Downing Street, redirecting the earmarked resources toward tackling the cost of living. Burnham's team indicated the decision forms part of a priorities reset aimed at distancing the new prime minister from the unpopular policies of Keir Starmer.

A spokesperson for Burnham stated that government focus will shift to delivering immediate, everyday change for communities. The decision follows widespread public opposition to the initiative, with a petition opposing it collecting around three million signatures after the scheme was announced last year.

The exact financial savings from cancelling the controversial project remain uncertain, however, as a specific budget was never set. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimated the digital ID scheme could cost around £1.8 billion, although these figures were also disputed.
