30 fewer NHS trusts are benefiting from Palantir's FDP than NHS England claims

Almost 30 NHS trusts that NHS England (NHSE) claims are benefiting from the Federated Data Platform (FDP), supplied by the controversial US artificial intelligence (AI) provider Palantir, are actually not using the system or its tools.

NHSE lists 137 trusts as live and realising benefits from the FDP, intended to connect patient records, coordinate discharges, and schedule surgeries. However, responses to more than 100 Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) requests obtained by the medical charity Medact revealed that 29 trusts stated the technology was either not live or not in use. NHSE noted that trusts cited as gaining benefits include those using back-office features for data submission or costing rather than frontline clinical applications.

The latest disclosures add to earlier scrutiny from the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) concerning unproven NHS claims that the FDP enabled 117,539 additional operations. The OSR confirmed that it will examine the latest claims under its casework function.

The news comes as Health Secretary Yvette Cooper faces mounting pressure from MPs and campaigners to terminate Palantir's contract.
